75 The Mountain, New Mexico, 1931

In 1930–31, O’Keeffe produced a pair of large paintings (30 × 36 inches, or 76 × 81 cm) that dramatically magnify one section of the red hills in extreme close-up (Red Hills Beyond Abiquiu and The Mountain, New Mexico). Here, the artist’s position has shifted from being a distant observer to actually standing within the hills.[75] She seems to look up, and even these relatively small hills fill her entire view. The ground has dropped away, and only a sliver of sky is visible above the rock. By concentrating on a small section of the landscape, O’Keeffe has better conveyed the scale of the entire place. Paired with Black Mesa Landscape, New Mexico/Out Back of Marie’s II, these paintings illustrate the two very different approaches she used to convey size and scale in her New Mexico works.[76] In both instances her approach challenged artistic conventions for landscape painting and the viewer’s own perception of reality.
